When should I brush my teeth?
Are there times when I shouldn’t brush my teeth?
Believe it or not, there are times when brushing your teeth can damage them. Brushing your teeth right after consuming acidic food and beverages is not a good idea. The high content of acid in food and drinks like soda or coffee softens and dissolves the enamel of your teeth. If there is enough time in between servings, minerals in your saliva neutralize the acidity and restore the enamel. If you brush your teeth before saliva gets a chance to do its magic, then you rub away the soft and weak enamel. This can lead to tooth erosion and loss of tooth structure.
“What should I do?”
- Limit consumption of acidic food and drinks.
- Do not hold food or drinks in your mouth.
- Rinse your mouth with water or fluoride mouth rinse rather than brushing immediately.
- Wait at least one to two hours before brushing your teeth.
